7:27 p.m.

Megan and her date, Yob, cut in front of the other students waiting in line for pictures and joined the group, coming to stand right behind Whad and Jenny.

“How’s it going, Yob?” Whad asked.

Yob was an exchange student from Rotterdam studying at Liberty High for the year. He had a different style than everyone else. He wore oval glasses, but you could only see his left eye, as he had long bangs hanging over the right side of his face. His tuxedo was purple. Yob was into things that didn’t quite fit in with the blue-collar culture of the kids from Liberty, but he was still a cool dude.

Yob smiled. “I’m very excited about American-style prom.”

Whad put a hand on Yob’s shoulder. “Yeah, well, I don’t think you came with the right date to experience all that prom night has to offer.”

Megan snarled at Whad. “Oh, go to hell.”

“For someone who got into Harvard, I thought you’d have a wittier come back than that,” Whad said, turning his back on Megan.

Jenny sidled up close to Whad and whispered to him, “When you leave for the Marines, you know I’ll write you all the time.”

“That’s nice,” Whad said, trying to pull away from her, “but you don’t need to do that.”

“But I want to. And I might even slip some pictures in there too. I’ll probably have to get a Polaroid camera, though, since I don’t think the Fotomat will develop the ones I’d want to send you.”

Whad took two more steps away from Jenny and bumped into Pud. He hadn’t seen Jenny’s brother approach.

“Sorry, chief,” Whad said.

“It’s all right,” Pud said, but there was a panicked look on his face as he went over to his sister. “Jenny. Does my breath smell bad?”

Jenny inhaled the air in front of Pud and crinkled her nose. “It smells like Daddy’s.”

Whad leaned near Pud and took a deep breath through the nose. The distinct scent of Jack Daniel’s definitely emanated from Pud. Whad pulled a roll of Certs from his pocket and offered some to Pud.

“Have a couple of these, chief. They’ll help.”

“Thanks,” Pud said, taking two.

Whad went over to where Action stood with his prostitutes. “What the hell?” Whad asked as he pointed over his shoulder with his thumb at Pud. “Didn’t I tell you it was off with Pud?”

“Yeah, I heard you.”

“Then why are you getting him loaded?”

“You know. For the comedy.”

“This isn’t funny.”

“Not yet. But wait till I get him really good and buzzing.”

Before Whad could lay into Action further, a high-pitched beeping sound grabbed everyone’s attention. Whad turned to see the Shane end the annoying sound as he removed his pager from his cummerbund, touching a button to silence it. He checked the number and clipped it back on.

“Business deal?” Megan asked the Shane.

“The Shane’s always working,” he said with a smile.

“You’re such a capitalist,” Megan said.

Debbie shot a look over to Lisa, and Whad overheard Debbie quietly say, “I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.
