7:27 p.m.
Megan and her date, Yob, cut in front of the other students waiting in line for pictures and joined the group, coming to stand right behind Whad and Jenny.
âHowâs it going, Yob?â Whad asked.
Yob was an exchange student from Rotterdam studying at Liberty High for the year. He had a different style than everyone else. He wore oval glasses, but you could only see his left eye, as he had long bangs hanging over the right side of his face. His tuxedo was purple. Yob was into things that didnât quite fit in with the blue-collar culture of the kids from Liberty, but he was still a cool dude.
Yob smiled. âIâm very excited about American-style prom.â
Whad put a hand on Yobâs shoulder. âYeah, well, I donât think you came with the right date to experience all that prom night has to offer.â
Megan snarled at Whad. âOh, go to hell.â
âFor someone who got into Harvard, I thought youâd have a wittier come back than that,â Whad said, turning his back on Megan.
Jenny sidled up close to Whad and whispered to him, âWhen you leave for the Marines, you know Iâll write you all the time.â
âThatâs nice,â Whad said, trying to pull away from her, âbut you donât need to do that.â
âBut I want to. And I might even slip some pictures in there too. Iâll probably have to get a Polaroid camera, though, since I donât think the Fotomat will develop the ones Iâd want to send you.â
Whad took two more steps away from Jenny and bumped into Pud. He hadnât seen Jennyâs brother approach.
âSorry, chief,â Whad said.
âItâs all right,â Pud said, but there was a panicked look on his face as he went over to his sister. âJenny. Does my breath smell bad?â
Jenny inhaled the air in front of Pud and crinkled her nose. âIt smells like Daddyâs.â
Whad leaned near Pud and took a deep breath through the nose. The distinct scent of Jack Danielâs definitely emanated from Pud. Whad pulled a roll of Certs from his pocket and offered some to Pud.
âHave a couple of these, chief. Theyâll help.â
âThanks,â Pud said, taking two.
Whad went over to where Action stood with his prostitutes. âWhat the hell?â Whad asked as he pointed over his shoulder with his thumb at Pud. âDidnât I tell you it was off with Pud?â
âYeah, I heard you.â
âThen why are you getting him loaded?â
âYou know. For the comedy.â
âThis isnât funny.â
âNot yet. But wait till I get him really good and buzzing.â
Before Whad could lay into Action further, a high-pitched beeping sound grabbed everyoneâs attention. Whad turned to see the Shane end the annoying sound as he removed his pager from his cummerbund, touching a button to silence it. He checked the number and clipped it back on.
âBusiness deal?â Megan asked the Shane.
âThe Shaneâs always working,â he said with a smile.
âYouâre such a capitalist,â Megan said.
Debbie shot a look over to Lisa, and Whad overheard Debbie quietly say, âI canât believe I let you talk me into this.
